Woodworm beetle identification
“Woodworm” is a group of beetles, not one insect. Common furniture beetle is the usual household species. Deathwatch, house longhorn and powderpost beetles have different implications for the structure.
Common furniture beetle
Small round exit holes, typically in softwood joists, floorboards and furniture. The most frequent UK finding.
Deathwatch beetle
Larger holes in hardwood, often historic oak. Associated with decayed timber. Structural advice may be needed.
House longhorn and powderpost
Less common, more serious in the wrong timber. Identification should be done from the hole, frass and the wood type.
What to collect
A photo of the holes, any beetles, and whether the room is damp. Do not sand the evidence away before the visit.
