Is your woodworm active or historic?
Old joists in UK houses are full of historic exit holes. Many need no treatment. Fresh frass, new holes in summer and crumbling edges are the signs that insects are still in the timber.
Historic damage
Smooth, darkened holes with no powder beneath them, in dry timber, are often decades old. Covering them with paint years ago is another clue.
Active damage
Clean-cut new holes, pale bore dust on surfaces below, and adult beetles on windowsills in late spring or summer suggest activity.
Moisture
Common furniture beetle prefers timber with a higher moisture content. Fixing a leak or a blocked air brick is part of the cure.
Do not rush to spray
A survey that distinguishes active from historic infestation can save you treating a whole roof that finished flying twenty years ago.
