When do wasps become a problem in the UK?
Wasp nests grow through late spring and peak in late summer. A small nest in April can be a busy entrance by August, especially in a roof void or a child's play area.
The season
Queens start nests in spring. Worker numbers rise through summer. Late-summer wasps forage more widely for sugar, which is when picnic problems start.
When to act
A nest in a living space, above a doorway, in a school grounds or where someone is allergic is a reason to treat. A remote hedge nest with no traffic over a path can sometimes be left.
What not to do
Do not block the hole. Wasps will cut a new exit, often into the room. Do not spray the entrance from a stepladder.
