Wasp, bee or hornet? Identification guide

Treating a honey bee colony as if it were a wasp nest is a mistake. Bees are important pollinators. Wasps and hornets can be treated when they threaten people, but identification comes first.

Wasps

Smooth body, bright yellow and black. Common wasp and German wasp build paper nests in lofts, soffits and shrubs. Traffic in and out of a single hole is typical.

Bees

Honey bees are furrier and often nest in cavities. Bumble bees nest in the ground or compost. Many bee situations can be left or relocated rather than destroyed.

Hornets

European hornets are larger, with more brown. They are less aggressive at a distance but still need care. Asian hornet sightings should be reported through official UK channels.

If you are unsure

A clear photo of the insect and the nest entrance is enough for us to advise before anyone climbs a ladder.
