Why DIY rat poison often fails

Ready-to-use bait from a supermarket is legal for householders, but it is easy to place it where children, pets or non-target wildlife can reach it, and easy to miss the harbour that is feeding the rats.

Wrong place, wrong amount

A single station in a kitchen does nothing if the colony is living in a drain or a neighbour's yard. Rats also avoid new objects until they trust them.

Resistance and bait shyness

Some UK rat populations show reduced response to older anticoagulants. Incomplete feeding can also teach survivors to avoid that bait.

Legal and safety duties

You must follow the label. Tamper-resistant stations, carcass searches and keeping bait away from food rooms are not optional extras.

A better sequence

Survey, remove food and water, proof the building, then treat. That order is why a structured visit usually outperforms a box from the shed.
