Signs of rats in your home or business
Rats rarely stay hidden for long. They leave droppings, gnaw marks, grease smears and night-time noise. If you can confirm even two of these signs, it is worth arranging a survey rather than waiting.
Droppings and urine
Fresh rat droppings are dark, blunt-ended and about the size of a raisin. You often find them along skirting, in lofts, behind bins or in outbuildings. A strong ammonia smell in a closed space can mean regular urination.
Gnawing and grease marks
Rats gnaw to keep their teeth in check. Look at the base of doors, plastic bins, pipe boxing and electrical cables. Dark smears along walls are from grease on their fur as they follow the same run.
Sounds and sightings
Scratching in voids after dark is common. A rat seen in daylight can mean the population is already large, because they usually avoid people.
