Clothes moth or carpet moth?

The adult moth is a poor target. Larvae of clothes moths and related species eat wool, silk and soiled natural fibres. Food moths in a kitchen cupboard are a different insect.

Clothes moths

Common clothes moths are small and gold-tan. Case-bearing clothes moths leave portable cases. Damage is irregular holes in wool, often in dark, unused areas.

Carpet edges

Activity under furniture and along skirting is typical. You may find webbing, cast skins and grazed pile.

Not every moth

Indian meal moths and other food moths breed in dry goods. Treating a wardrobe will not fix a pantry.

Traps

Pheromone traps show whether adults are present. They do not replace treatment of the fibres the larvae are eating.
