Flying ant day and what it means for your home
On a warm, humid summer day, black garden ants send out winged queens and males. Most of those insects are from outdoor nests. Winged ants indoors, or a trail that returns every day, is a different problem.
The outdoor swarm
A short-lived cloud of flying ants in the garden is normal. They do not need treatment. Keep windows closed if you prefer them outside.
When it is your building
Piles of wings on a windowsill, ants in a loft void, or trails from a crack in a patio slab that leads under the kitchen door mean a nest you may want treated.
What to avoid
Spraying the flying ants does not reach the queen. Follow the workers back, or ask for a survey.
After the day
If indoor trails continue for a week, it is not just flying ant day. That is when a nest treatment is useful.
